There’s a lovely scene at the beginning of the story, where Charlie receives some bad news and then retreats under his duvet with a book. And my own childhood is inextricably linked with Charlie’s story. Over the course of the book Charlie, with the help of his friends, begins to control his power by learning how to cope with his stress. It’s a book about a boy that changes into all sorts of animals whenever he feels anxious or stressed. Bely here states that Petersburg’s existence is affirmed by its appearance on a map the map validates the city as more than just the construction of a solipsistic mind. ![]() The prologue closes with the idea that “Petersburg not only appears to us, but actually does appear-on maps: in the form of two small circles, one set inside the other, with a black dot in the center and from precisely this mathematical point, which has no dimension, it proclaims forcefully that it exists…”. Let’s go all the way back to the prologue, in which Bely established his earlier theme of narrative instability with his opening question, “What is this Russian Empire of ours?” Bely concludes the prologue by opening up another key theme: the relationship between fiction and reality. If it seems surprising that an institution like the Booker Prize would go for gross-out body horror, one need only consider the deft social commentary that underpins Chung’s tales. A young woman is beset by a talking head in her toilet, made from, as the head tells the woman, “the things you dumped down the toilet, like your fallen-out hair and feces and toilet paper you used to wipe your behind.” No matter how the woman tries to silence or destroy the head, it grows and disrupts her life through courtship, marriage, and the birth of her daughter. If the first story of a collection is meant to set the tone for the whole volume, then “The Head,” the opener to South Korean author Chung’s first work to be translated into English, is a doozy.
